New Dial-up center, FAQ section, FTP It has been a long time since the last issue of ArmFN news was released. Not that we had nothing to inform you about. The fact is that we have been very busy building up our network in order to make it more reacheable, accessible, user-friendly and secure for as many users as possible. In this connection, we do apologise for the interruption of the services due to the re-structuring of the system.
The Armenian Freenet has substantially enlarged the connectivity options for our users. Now, the dial-up connectivity is available through the following nine telephone numbers: 56 90 21 through 56 90 29 using PPP (point-to-point protocol). It is free, of course! For information on how to configure your workstations for dial-up connectivity, please see the newly established FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) under the ArmFN site at www.freenet.am.
We have enriched our services by creating a corresponding web mail interface to facilitate your email correspondence exchange through web browser. The link to this interface is available under www.freenet.am.
Now, every user has a possibility to try build his/her own website: for this, you should create a directory named "public_html" in your home directory, and the files you put there will appear in users.freenet.am/~username where "username" is your login name. The page entitled "index.html" in your "public_html" directory will be the starting page of your website. FTP protocol can be used for putting your website online.
In order to regularise the use of the limited disk space on our servers, we have introduced disk quotas: soft quota corresponds to 1MB, and hard quota to 2MB; if the total volume of your files exceeds the soft quota, you will receive a warning requesting to reduce your volume within one week; if the hard quota is excessed, you will be denied the opportunity to perform any operation on your files, except their removal. Should we find your website that exceeds the hard quota interesting, we may consider waivering the quota. We have also introduced a limitation on the size of a single email message which now equals 1MB.
Some of the existing services have also been enhanced: you can now upload and download your files using FTP protocol; the same modality may be used for building your websites (remember about disk quotas).
With exponentially increasing number of Freenet users, the Internet Project Team is unfortunately no longer able to provide technical support to its users in terms of user hardware and software setup, configuration and maintenance. Please consult other specialists or acquaintances or, for more organised solution, organisations and other groups can enroll in our training sessions one of which is dedicated specifically to this issue.
We regret to inform our users that some of them try to bypass the rights and limitations established for the users of ArmFN thus hindering the performance of the entire network. In order to prevent such users from interfering with the system and jeopardizing the interests of other users, we have started regular and detailed system monitoring and will be terminating the ArmFN membership of non-complying users.
