Welcome to Freenet

The INTERNET Project of the United Nations Development Programme in Armenia proudly announces that the first Freenet on this side of the Caucasian Mountains is put into operation as of 9 February 1998! The Armenian Freenet is dedicated to promotion of sustainable human development, technological progress and preservation of cultural heritage of Armenia.

In this first ArmFN Weekly News issue, we would like to express our most sincere gratitude for the invaluable cooperation of the Open Society Institute that contributed to this endeavor with financial assistance, moral support, and the demanding attitude of a donor, as well as to all those that were supporting this initiative both in material and in moral terms!  We would also like to compliment the first user of the Armenian Freenet  - his name is unknown to the general public, but his deed will forever remain in the annals of the Internet! THANKS TO EVERYONE AND WELCOME!

The first official website hosted by the Armenian Freenet is the official website of the Central Electoral Commission at cec.freenet.am. This bilingual (English and Armenian) site is reflecting the entire process of the presidential campaign and elections and will contain the most up-to-date online information on the results of the elections.

The second official website launched on the ArmFN server is that of the UN DHA Armenia at unocha.freenet.am that contains most comprehensive information on the Caucasus Appeals, Situation Reports, and other useful data on the humanitarian assistance to Armenia and the other Transcaucasus countries.

The first personal website on the ArmFN contains professionally made and breathtakingly beautiful photos of the Mountain Aragatz and its surroundings - something to see with your own eyes at any season of the year!

During the first two months of 1998, the Training component of the Armenian Freenet involved over 50 trainees from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Finance and Trade, and Teachers Association of Armenia that attended training courses on Internet and WWW and Networking Technologies.

The Freenet training facility has been made available to children of two schools in Yerevan for on-line education and exchange with schoolchildren in several countries of the world in the framework of cooperation with Armenian Diaspora Narod Networking Project.

We welcome all our current and future users and are looking forward to developing a Freenet that would be the an important source of information, forum for exchange of ideas on all topics of public interest, and ultimately the best partner for everybody in Armenia and beyond.
