Troubleshooting

Question:
I cannot log in the ArmFN
  Answer
The user authentication (i.e. password verification) is validated by the system, first of all, when connecting via the dial-up access point and, also, when connecting to the mail server for sending/receiving messages. In case either the login name or the password is incorrectly entered, the system displays the most general message without any details, which is done for security reasons.

The reasons for an error message, which can appear in the process of authentication, are as follows:

  • There is no account with that name on the ArmFN server. If you have a regular Internet connection, you can check the account either with the help of the Finger program, which is, for example, included in the standard package of WS_FTP. If a question mark (???) appears next to the user's name in the finger response, it means that the mentioned account does not exist on the given server.
  • In the authenticating process, the user's name should be always entered in lowercase (and not uppercase) letters, even if you may have used uppercase letters in the registration form.
  • While entering the password, make sure that your keyboard is switched to the English layout and that the Caps-Lock is turned off.

Of course, another reason may be that you incorrectly typed in your password (see "I forgot my password").

If all the above mentioned conditions are met and you are sure that you remember your password correctly and still cannot log on the ArmFN, then you should approach the System Administrator (freenet-daemon@freenet.am).

Question:
I forgot my password

Answer
If you forgot your password, you should visit 'My Freenet' section of ArmFN website to enter your Date of Birth data and complete the 'Question and Aswer' section. After you have completed these steps, the system will allow you to assign a new password for your account. This information will be recorded in the Password Change Log under the same 'My Freenet' section.

DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD!

Question:
My messages do not reach the recipient, or my incoming mail does not reach me
  Answer
To understand why there appear problems with e-mail delivery, you should get acquainted with the main principles of email functioning on the Internet. These principles are fairly simple:
  • It is actually impossible to lose mail on the Internet: either messages get to the destination or are sent back if a return address is correct.
  • In most of the cases, the message is immediately delivered to the recipient. Delay in delivery may be caused either by the server destination if, for example, it is disconnected or overloaded at that moment, or if the connectivity of the sender's server is out of order. In both cases, a message is not lost and the server is trying to deliver it until the time duration set by the System Administrator is expired. The period set for ArmFN is 5 days. If a message is not delivered for 5 days, it will be sent back to the sender with an appropriate error message.
  • Besides, the ArmFN server sends a notification to the sender after the first 4 hours of failed attempts to deliver a message. Often users take this warning message for an error, however they should pay attention to the first lines of that message which reads, "This is a warning message only. Will keep trying within next 5 days", etc..
  • Among frequently encountered errors there are that (1) there is no such user on this server destination, and (2) an error occurred while attempting to place the message in the recipient's mailbox, which is very often the case when the recipient's disk quota is exceeded. If you get an error message from the e-mail subsystem, it definitely contains the reason for rejection.
  • It may happen that the error message returns to you and you have no space in your mailbox -- the disk quota is exceeded. In this regrettable situation the message will be actually lost.
  • Mailbox domain administrators frequently arrange the so-called relay servers, which may serve as a transitional delivery point in case, for any reason, the main server at that moment cannot let in a message. In particular, we foresee "roundabout ways" for freenet.am mail domain via other providers in Armenia -- likewise we ourselves grant backup for others on our servers.
  • If you come across a message like "Relaying denied", it means that there is an error in configuration. In this case, we strongly request you to forward the message to the domain administrator from which you got the error message. Usually the administrator of any mail domain on the Internet has an address like "postmaster@domain...".

Of course, no one is secure from equipment or server operating system failures, but the probability that this happens is less if a mail server is not a PC, and an operating system is not Windows :).  For your information, ArmFN users at present get their services through a Sun computer and Solaris operating system.

Question:
I get advertising messages, which are of no interest to me
  Answer
The so-called "unsolicited" advertising messages are quite common on the Internet, but are however un-welcomed all over the world. If you regularly get anonymous letters containing commercial advertising, or games like "piramide", "lucky letters" -- it means that your address has been somehow recorded in a catalogue of the so-called spammers, i.e. people who are spreading advertisements and all kind of junk messages. Unfortunately, in this situation the only thing you can do is to change your e-mail address.

How could your address get into this kind of catalogues? Probably you have registered it on not-so-trusted site (hmm) or in an e-mail address catalogue like Yahoo People Search. To avoid that, we can only advise you to REGISTER YOUR ADDRESS FOR SERVICES OR MAILING LISTS OF A SOUND AND RELIABLE ORGANISATION/COMPANY, and avoid signing up for unknown or untrusted services.

Question:
I can access only the ArmFN web site, while opening other sites cause an error message
  Answer
To get a free-of-charge access to Armenian sites through the ArmFN, you should be connected to the so-called proxy server. Detailed instructions on how to do it are here.

Question:
I get "Permission denied" response when I try to connect to a web site through the Freenet proxy server.

Answer
Armenian Freenet grants free access to the web sites hosted by one of these Armenian ISP's: Arminco, Yerevan Physics Institute and Academy of Sciences, set in accordance with mutual agreement with these organizations. If you receive "Permission denied" when you try to connect to a web site, the reason may be either of the following:

  1. the web site is located outside Armenia
  2. the web site is not hosted by one of the Armenian ISPs mentioned above. This is a very rare case, since approx. 95% of web sites of Armenia are accessible through our proxy server.

Question:
I have sent a registration form for a new account, but I didn't receive a notification.
  Answer
The registration forms are processed in 2-3 working days. If after this period you still do not receive a notification from ArmFN's system administrator, the only reason may be that the e-mail address you mentioned in the corresponding field of the Registration Form is invalid. In all other cases Freenet Daemon sends you either an invitation letter with some technical information, or a refusal.
